Mobile Healthcare Provides Organization to Patients

The medical realm is a vast and complex system, with varying levels of professional doctors, nurses, and specialty practices. Each hospital system is often host to hundreds of different specialists. For any one patient, there may be multiple assigned doctors, a specialist for each symptom. This can lead to confusion for the patient, who must keep track of each doctor’s remarks, treatment plan, and prescriptions. The entire process is one of chaos for the patient. This is accelerated when the patient travels to a new city for specified care. Even in the best hospital system, there is still an unavoidable disconnect between the patient and the hospital system that can leave the patient feeling flustered and uncomfortable. Patients, especially those with chronic conditions or those with undiagnosed conditions, are in need of stability and order. Amidst the multitude of doctors, nurses, and treatments that they see every day, these patients need an organized structure that will give them peace and a sense of control.

This organization is available in the field of mobile healthcare. A recent report from FierceMobileHealthcare mentions an app released by Boston Children’s Hospital called MyPassport. The app provides connections to doctors and a central location in which all of the test results, treatment plans, and other health records of the patient can be found. This gives the patient the ability to access all of their health information in one place, and then immediately see and contact their doctors from the same mobile app. The patient thus has a modicum of control over their health journey, and a new level of understanding and management. Having all of this information in one place can also provide an opportunity for doctors to notice patterns and make diagnoses that would have otherwise been invisible. This level of accessibility and unification makes MyPassport a promising mHealth development.

A similar app from the Boston Children’s Hospital is MyWay, an app that provides hospital patrons with information about the surrounding area and amenities. This app is obviously astoundingly helpful for patients who are traveling to see a specialist, and are unfamiliar with the city and area. With this concierge level information, this hospital is taking a step past their normal requirements and “going the extra mile” as it were. By providing their patients with information to make their overall experience easier and simpler, the hospital becomes more than just an awful necessity, instead proving that they care about the overall experience of their patients. Apps resembling MyPassport and MyWay should be the future of every hospital system, as patient care becomes top priority in the competitive hospital market. Providing any semblance of order and control to a patient in the throes of a confusing disease is certainly admirable and beneficial for all involved.
